What is yoga?

The practice of yoga has existed for thousands of years and is an Indian philosophical system.  These days, "yoga" is most commonly associated with Hatha yoga, the style of yoga consisting of physical postures and exercises.   The word yoga means "to yoke" or "unite," and refers to the spiritual process of uniting the individual self with the greater, or universal, self.  However, yoga also means uniting the physical, mental, and spiritual.  Through yoga practice, one can transcend the limitations of the ego and become united with their highest self.

At Bamboomoves, we welcome novices and experienced practitioners to experience Bamboo Yoga, an exercised-based practice that also includes proper breathing techniques (pranayama), postures (asana), as well as focus and meditation (dharana and dhyana).  One of the most important yogic texts, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, includes these practices as part of a pathway leading to union with one's highest self.

Yoga is now being recognized as a path to both inner peace and holistic health and well-being.  Our goal is offer all individuals an opportunity to move their body, mind, & spirit in both a challenging yet rewarding program.  Our classes will give you greater energy, encourage peace of mind, relieve stress, and can aid in weight loss and recovery from injury and illness.

We offer classes for all level of students in yoga, as well as other disciplines such as Tai Chi Ch'uan, Taoist Energy training, various martial arts, and bellydance.  We are also community-based, and encourage students to continue their "Bamboomovement" outside the classroom and into their daily lives.
